The first ever PATLIB in Malta was launched in November 2025, at the University of Malta’s (UM) Knowledge Transfer Office, through support and close collaboration with the Malta Commerce Department (Malta IP Office) and the European Patent Office (EPO). The UM PATLIB centre provides free initial guidance to the general public on inventions, as well as access to patent knowledge to help entrepreneurs and SMEs understand how they can protect their intellectual property, what type of intellectual property rights may be best suited, and explanations of the patent/design processes. While centred on patents, the PATLIB centre also provides guidance on other intellectual property rights, including trademarks and designs, offering a holistic IP helpdesk for the local community. The centre also plans to offer lecturing services and training focusing on areas of interest to the local community.
