The Commission has published an updated version of the ERA Living Guidelines on the responsible use of Generative AI in research.
This second revision of the Guidelines—originally launched during the R&I Days in 2024—ensures they keep pace with rapid technological advancements in generative AI and their impact on the scientific community.
The update maintains the simple and operational approach of the Guidelines, reinforcing core recommendations that help researchers apply key principles of research integrity—such as accountability, transparency, and responsibility—in the context of generative AI.
This targeted and technical revision enhances clarity and educational value, introducing new recommendations—including guidance on interactions with third parties using AI (e.g., in meetings or information management) and the associated risks. It also highlights the need for organisations to be aware of "hidden prompts"—instructions embedded in AI systems that may remain invisible to human oversight.
Developed with input from countries and stakeholders across the European Research Area (ERA), the Guidelines continue to benefit from an inclusive and open feedback process, ensuring ongoing contributions and improvements.
